Officials & Certification

WE NEED YOU TO JOIN THE STRIPES!

As a fast-paced sport with many moving parts, quadball requires several officials. Every quadball match is officiated by six or seven referees: a head referee (HR), lead assistant referee (LAR), seeker referee (SR), up to two assistant referees (AR), and two goal judges. These referees work together to ensure each game runs safely and effectively. USQ’s referee program aims to certify referees to ensure the highest standards nationwide.

The USQ Officials Team has released it's 2024 Casebook in advance of US Quadball Cup 2024. Officials and players can access the casebook here and in the Referee Resources in the resources section of this page.

Once a month, the USQ Officials Team hosts a Town Hall to answer questions, provide insight, and increase understanding of officials to standardize adjudication of the current USQ Ruleset. The final Officials Town Hall before nationals will take place April 9, 2024 at 8pm EST/ 7pm CST. Interested parties can join here.

Referee certification is an ongoing process. This process consists of written and practical tests and is supplemented by referee development programs, online resources, and a system to review referee performance continually.

Only certified head referees aged 17 years and up may be paid to officiate an adult competitive quadball game. Head Referees will earn $20 for all events, sanctioned or unsanctioned. Lead assistant referees are paid $10 per official USQ match.

If you are a non-player, you must also have a non-playing officials membership after completing your tests if you are a LAR or HR. A playing officials membership is no longer required if you are a player.  All officials memberships will expire on June 30

Flag Runners

Our sport relies on a number of officials in order to function properly. Along with referees, every game includes a flag runner. The flag runner is a neutral athlete and official whose job it is to remain fair to both teams while avoiding capture for as long as possible.
